My name is Zach Orobko and I am currently a Journalism student at BCIT. Before becoming a BCIT student, I obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and an extended minor in History from SFU.
My post-secondary journey started with one question that always occupied my mind: “How does the world work?” Once I answered my question academically, I needed to think about how I could harness my curiosity and inquisitiveness to keep answering this question throughout my career. Entering the sphere of journalism is how I get to answer my question of “How does the world work?” professionally.
The work of a journalist has always inspired me. Reporters like Justin McElroy, Richard Zussman, Rachel Gilmore, and Ken Klippenstein have inspired me to dive deep into a topic and to enjoy doing so. Canada, and by extension Metro Vancouver, are cultural melting pots. I want to learn as much as possible about the different groups of people here (or wherever life takes me) as possible.
A lifelong obsession with learning and helping others learn has prepared me for entering the field of journalism. Sharing stories and producing news allows me to transform a passion into a profession.
I will earn my diploma in Broadcasting and Online Journalism in the spring of 2025. Once this program finishes, I look forward to beginning to share stories in politics, culture, current events, sports or wherever my journey will take me.
